Welcome to Mr. Andrews Blog- First blog of the year

Hi,

You made it!  This is our class blog site!  I am a big believer that reflection is a huge part of learning.  I use blogging to help my students process their understandings and reflect on what they are learning.  My hope is that you will have fun with this forum.

You will periodically be asked to blog about something specific, or about your current understandings about what we are doing in class.  There are several things that you need to be aware of when blogging on this forum.

First of all, this is an educational blog, treat it like it is! Spelling, punctuation, grammar, etc... count! This is not a discussion between you and your friends on your cell phone, this is for school!  Use spell correct every time and do not use "text speak" when writing on this blog!

Second, everything you write can be seen by others in the class.  Be respectful, polite, watch what you say and be supportive of one another!  Remember, your words are a reflection of you!

Third, effort is important!  When I ask you to write a reflection that means be thorough!  You are in 7th grade I expect that your responses will be of 7th grade caliber!  Complete sentences, paragraph form, punctuation, and effort in your responses!  When I ask for a reflection, that is more than just a few sentences!

Lastly, this is a public forum, for your anonymity you are to use the same format for your name as is used by google docs in the format of "First name, last initial" anytime you use your name. Make sure you do not publish any identifying information or personal pictures of you or your friends.

This week you will simply be responding to this post by explaining what your favorite area of science is and why it is your favorite.  Please tell us what in particular you enjoy about that area of science and an example of that area of science in our daily lives.  To complete this assignment simply log in using your google docs password and then click on the "# comments" link on the bottom of the blog post, then write your response...

Once you are done you will click on "publish".

Your response should be 3-5+ sentences long! You will not immediately see your response as I need to OK it before it goes live so be patient,do not post multiple times!  Once you submit you are done!  Have fun blogging!

Mr. A

  1. My favorite area of science is probably experimenting with things, for example the rattlebacks. Experimenting is probably my favorite are in science because I love to learn new things. Another reason why I love experimenting is because I am best at learning physicaly, not on paper. Thats my favorite area in science and why I like it so much!

  2. (This is my third attempt of trying to post this blog. I hope it works this time!)

My favorite are of science is astronomy and space exploration. I have a lot of questions and wonders about space. It is crazy to think that space might go on forever and it makes me realize how very small we are. I wonder if there is another boy somewhere in space typing this exact science blog. I hope that within my generation someone will successfully make it to Mars. My mom hopes though that it's not me!

  3. I enjoy science a lot, but if I had to choose a type of science to study that would be my favorite it would be geology. I have always been fascinated with rocks and how something so simple looking, could be made up of so many complicated things. Just thinking about how everything inside that simple looking rock is made up of unique cells. I have always wanted to be able to study those things and learn all about them. So that when I look at a certain-plain looking- rock I can understand that the dull thing in front of me is actually unique and amazing in its own way. This makes me think of the quote “Don’t judge a book by its cover” same here because, “Its whats on the inside that really counts” with rocks.

  4. I really like to learn a lot about different things in science. And If I had to pick one I would pick zoology. I would pick it because I have a lot of questions. And I want to learn about many different stuff about animals. The first question I want to know about zoology is what different type of animals eat to survive. The second question I want to know about zoology is what they do or how they do to catch their prey. That is why I would pick that are of science because I have a lot of questions that I want to learn about.

  5. I like science quite a lot, I remember that I would always look up to it and want to be a scientist. I always looked into wanting to be an astronomist. I liked the solar system a lot, it is just very interesting to me. The reason I like astronomy is because of the mysteries that are in space. They just fascinate me a lot, mainly when there could be more things that we don’t know about beyond our galaxy. I like the part where some astronomists send a satellite. I mainly like it because that means they will use a rocket ship and would have to build it. I liked seeing how the rocket or the satellite was built like. An example of astronomy that happens in our lives would have to be when ‘Curiosity’ went to Mars, so we can finally learn more about Mars.

  6. I like a lot of different things in science but if I had to choose I would choose astronomy. I chose astronomy because its really interesting learning about our planets and stars, and what's different about them. Astronomy is my favorite because theres so many weird things that our plants can do which makes us no able to live on. Like for example venus has rain like us but its acid rain which if you were in it, it will burn and wilt away your skin. I always wondered what some planets were made of and how they produce different weather and things. I always was interested in this kinda thing ever since I was little and i'm still obsessed! I hope theres a lot more exciting news about our planets on the way.

  7. Science is composed of a variety of different subjects, from Optics to Botany but my favorite lies under the category of Zoology; Ornithology. Ornithology is the study of birds all birds including the massive Great Grey Owl to the minute Spatuletail Hummingbird. The reason my favorite subject is Ornithology is because I am fascinated by all the different types of birds, almost 10,000, and how their characteristics vary from one continent to another. One of my favorites is the bar headed goose who can fly at an extreme altitude while enduring the bitter cold over the Himalayas. Birds are important and everywhere on your roof to outside the school they are a crucial part to the food web. It is crazy to think that such a simple species can be so complex as a whole.

  8. I would have to say my favorite area in science would probably have to be chemistry because I like to see what chemicals like to explode or fizz when they are mixed with another chemical. In that area I would have to say watching chemicals explode in a lab seems to make me want to do it more. Another thing I like about chemistry is that you may never know what will happen inside that beaker if you do something wrong. Finally I like chemistry is that you can make new discoveries about chemicals to keep people safe.

  9. My favorite area of science is zoology because I love animals. I wonder how the animals defend themselves when a predator comes near. Some animals ate the same thing and some eat something different and so I wonder what an animals diet is. Like a turtle's diet or a snow leopard's diet other than meat or plants. Even though I might know a lot about one animal I may want to learn more about that same animal. Animals also have many personalities that I would like to learn more about too. Again I love animals and that is why my favorite area of science is zoology.

  10. My favorite area of science is marine biology because I like the ocean. It fascinates me. Though I have never been to the ocean, I have always wanted to go. I want to swim with dolphins and sharks. Dolphins have been known to protect humans against sharks. I wonder why that is. To me, it seems that dolphins and humans have a strange connection. I can see how we are alike. But I also see how we are different. If the sharks attack while there are dolphins near by, we are sometimes defended. The dolphins could possibly try to warn us. Sharks are not be feared though. I think they are just curious of us. To them, we are strange. They are strange to us. I would like to study them. Someday.

  11. In science we have been learning about scientist. We talked about how anyone can be a scientist. It doesn't matter what they look like. We talked about how you can work in any enviorment to be a scientist. Really everyone can be a scientist no matter how old ow tall or small.

  12. My favorite area of science is physics. This is because It's fun to learn things properties. I know that this area of science is extremely difficult and that you can over come it if you try your hardest. But it is really cool when you pretty much know how things work. For example: How to find the net force of a moving body if you know the mass and acceleration.

  13. This week we learned a little bit about how to be scientifically literate. we learned anyone can be a scientist, no matter age, race, religion, or gender. Science is involved more than you would think, pretty much any job ending in "ist" is involved with a scientist, In fact more than that, I believe science is everywhere! Overall, I look foward to learning a lot more about science this year.

  14. The two fields of Science I enjoy are Astronomy and Geology. I have always been fascinated by the endless amount of stars in the sky. Geology I like because I wanted to learn how volcanos and earthquakes happened. But I have also gotten into Computer Science recently. I started to watch this guy named SethBling on Youtube and Twitch TV play video games. He would sometimes talk about working for Microsoft and he got me into Computer Science.

  15. I have always loved science. It has been my favorite subject since second grade. But, the one that I love the most is Astronomy. I love astronomy because I have always been fascinated by the sky. Ever since I was a little girl I would love to sit up on my roof and look up at the stars. When we would go camping I would love just sitting out and looking at them. It was better when we went camping because we would go in the mountains where there wasn't so much pollution. Pollution causes you to not see as many stars because it's so foggy. Whenever we would watch videos on astronomy in fifth grade I would always be so interested and entertained. I would always be interested in learning about the planets. I can't wait to see if there are other life forms out there going to school like us. Where they learn about the other planets and they are wondering if earth has life forms. That is just so interesting to me. Maybe when I grow up I could see if there are life forms on other planets. I could go on and on why I love astronomy. But there are a few reasons why I love astronomy.

  16. I have always loved science. My favorite area of science is Zoology. I like zoology because I love animals quite alot, they have always been a big part of my life. Its is also my favorite area of science because I have always wonder how animals protect themselves and why they arent all the same. Zoology is a very fascinating part of science because you learn about animals you never heard of or you learn new things about a specific animal.

  17. If I had to choose just one area of science that I enjoy the most, it would be one of the greatest phenomenons in science: space. Most of us don’t really think about it much, but for all that’s out there, we really don’t know that much about space. We haven’t even figured out an efficient way to explore all of the the planets in our own galaxy, which is one among many. We have little information about the far distant planets and have yet to understand the many mysteries of space such as black holes. Astronomy and Cosmology are very important in our lives as well. If you think about the space world, you realize that without it we would most likely not exist- or would we? Space also provides us with sense of time, and without space we probably wouldn’t have gravity either. So when it truly comes down to it, the study of space is very important to us and is a field that I find fascinating as well.

  18. I love all the areas of science but if I had to pick one I would choose Biology, or to be more specific zoology or human biology. I love learning about human biology because when I grow up I really want to be a doctor or a vet when I grow up. Being a vet or doctor includes a lot a biology. In our daily lives we use biology form breathing, digesting, and working out. We even use biology when we take medicine to help out our body's. I haven't learned much about biology in science class, but I can't wait to learn more about it this year.

  19. My favorite area in science is Astronomy. The reason why it is my favorite is because I've always been interested too what is beyond this Earth about stars, planets, and galaxies. I've also wanted too know is there extra-terrestrial life out there because when you think about it the Universe is basically infinite so that's what I want too know. That's why Astronomy is my favorite area of science.

  20. I like science a lot but i like the most is learning about the human body like how it works. Like when it tells it when to throw talk or ride a bike. the reason i like learning about this is it interest me about how it tells it to do the day to day things we do. Like when we learn to do something it so interesting how to see how it picks it up so quickly. But i still have a lot of questions about it like how it moves so fast after it is sent though the thought.

  21. I love science!!!! In particular I love biology. Biology is the study of living organisms. I like biology because the more you learn about living things around you the more you come to appreciate them and learning in general is something that I can't keep myself from not doing. Some examples of biology in day to day life are everything, the foods we eat, the paper we write on, even used to be an organism at one point and one more... us, you and me are all organisms. Now you can see why I love Science.

  22. My favorite part of science is ecology. I like learning about animals and their habitats. It is very interesting to study about the different biotic things and how they interact with their environment. Ecology is very interesting because most animal’s survival instincts are quite incredible. I also enjoy geology, but overall my favorite part of science is ecology.

  23. My favorite part of science is were you dissect animals or creatures. I also like astronomy which is were you look up at the sky with a telescope and you see the stars, planets, moons.I like zoology too its were you watch plants grow and discover new things.Science has different things that will make you think and wonder till you get the conclusion.

  24. What I like about science is the experiments and how we get puzzled and confused. Also like researching and investigating new things .I also like messing around with ingredients and see what it smells like, looks like, and what it does. Although I may not be good at science I think its exciting learning new things.

  25. My favorite area in science is experimenting in groups. I like getting to experiment with things physically because I feel like I get a better learning experience overall if I get to work will something in person not just reading about it or watching a video on it. I also really like to experiment with partners or in groups because I get to collaborate with others and hear their ideas too. Overall my favorite area in science is experimenting in groups because I can better understand the subject that way.

  26. Science is one of my all time favorites. But if I have to pick one part, I'd have to say Geology. I love to study rocks, and learn new things about them that we didn't know! Also learn how earthquakes are formed, and a ton more! I mean nobody really picks up a rock wonders what its made, etc... So to be a person who knows that, and notices the little things is really special! I hope to learn a lot more this year that talks about geology!!

  27. I like many different parts of science but my favorite part would be probably Astronomy. I love it if I go to mountains for camp and we spend a night outside with the stars. Where you are far away from the city so the lights don’t get in the way. I also love the stories that come with the constellations. Like Orion, Perseus, Andromeda, and Pegasus. Along with all the mysteries of space, like if there ever was water on Mars. In conclusion that is why Astronomy is my favorite subject in science.

  29. Of all forms of science, Chemistry is my personal favorite. With all the different chemicals the reactions are virtually unlimited! Strontium Phosphate, a slightly soluble salt, upon coming in contact with H2O it crystallizes in a hexagon pattern, a very unique reaction. The simulations on the website called PHET have a simulation that has Strontium Phosphate in it, with the reaction included. I am very passionate about mixing chemicals and seeing their individual reactions, a very fascinating subject indeed.

  30. My favorite type of science would have to be physics. I like physics because it is every where in the world and on all planets and stars. Physics is a natural science unlike some others like chemistry. Physics involves matter and I think that is my favorite part, Physics also visits energy and force. Gravity and heat energy are only two of the many things that physics can do in our daily lives.

  31. My favorite type of science is astronomy. The reason I like astronomy is because, everything can be traced back to space. Another reason I like astronomy is because space is where everything is. The next thing that I love about space is that its really beautiful. Looking up at the stars can take your breathe away. Also thinking about space is really fascinating and mysterious because we may think that we know a lot about but we don't. So hopefully in the next couple of years/generations we will discover new and exciting things from new stars to new galaxies. So for the reason above is why I love astronomy.

  32. My favorite part about Science is Astronomy. Astronomy is my favorite subject cause it leaves me with tons and tons of curiosity. I always wonder if there is any life on other planets or in space. I've also wondered if there is a planet, is there any sports like football or baseball that we play? Overall, my favorite part about Science is Astronomy because of how much curiosity is a factor.

  33. My favorite area in science is geology. I like geology because you study rocks and rocks are my favorite animal. Rocks are also cool because they can mean a lot. Such as a rock with layers of different of rocks that could be millions or ever billions of years old.

  34. Science is one of my favorite subjects. My favorite part about science is astrology. I love it just because I love space, and all of the stars and planets are so fascinating to me. But if there was a second thing I love about science would be just looking at things. Like the black rectangular box we looked at on friday. That kind of stuff just makes me wanna listen and learn. So that is why I like science.

  35. Marine biology is my favorite type of science, I love love love animals. I have 3 pets and I have a fish, I love to learn about him all the time, sometimes I just stare at him for hours! I use that science in my everyday life by feeding my fish and studying fish and animals.

  36. The kind of science I like the most is computer science. I like it because I like to play games on computer like Clash of Clans. I would like to learn more about how they make computers and how they make games, websites, and programs. Computers are good because we do work on it, and not use lots of papers to save trees and not waste. when your family lives in a different countries, we use the computer to see them or talk to them. There are lots of reasons why computer science is interesting.

  37. My favorite science area is about the ecosystem. I personally think that it is fascinating because you get to learn about how the environment around you works. You get a better understanding of each organisms habitat. Plus I love getting to see new exotic creatures living in areas I have never heard of before. I love learning about my surroundings, and other areas ecosystem's here on earth.

  38. Science has practically unlimited areas in it. And it was very difficult to pick my favorite area. Although it is probably space. I chose this area because I find it amazing. I am always blown away by thought of the universe and the size of it. With light years and different galaxies I am constantly pondering about countless things included in our universe. We have only discovered a extremely small fraction of the universe and I always love to learn more information about it. It is in all of our daily lives with the moon being full or not, the seasons rotating, and obviously for people who our astronomers. And while space is not as big as it used to be, it is still very important to me.

    ReplyDelete
  39. There are many areas of science that interest me, but the one that interests me the most is space. Everyday I am awed by how little we know about space. For example in our solar system we have only been able to have rovers land on one planet and the moon. The fact is there are more planets in space than imaginable and we know so little about them. The reason I’m so interested in the planets is because they are the thing about which we know the least. If we could figure out an effective way to send humans/rovers to other planets our knowledge of space would grow incredibly. We could learn about stuff that we don’t even know exists right now. Now you know that if I had to pick an area of science it would be space because I’m curious about it everyday.

  40. My favorite area of science is the human body. To me it is the most interesting area. I love to learn about cells, muscles, and organs and what they do to help your body. When I’m an adult I want to be a surgeon. I‘ve thought about this time and time again and it is the most interesting job I can think of. In addition to being a surgeon and having the job I’d like to do most, I can save lives at the same time.

  43. My favorite part of science is that in science we sometimes get to explode cool stuff.I like to explode stuff. For example put a mento in soda.

  44. There is lots of subjects in science, but my favorite is chemistry. I enjoy chemistry because it deals with the identification of which matter is composed. I really enjoy seeing how the properties react. When I think of that I think of when the test tubes react and change when you combine it with another liquid. I like when you can combine a chemical with another chemical and get something totally different. I also like it because it helps with our medicine and helps save peoples lives. The last reason I like chemistry is because we get to explore more into what science is.

  45. My favorite area of science who'd have to be experimenting or learning about adams. This is because whenever i have a question I will find an answer or bug someone until they tell me. Evn tho i just sed i like experimenting I must say I don't like experimenting in school do to the fact that I can never finish on time. But I also like learning about atoms because I know that adams macke everything that around me; and sometimesIi wonder what everything is made of so by learning adames to me I'm learning what things are made of. Now the only problem is I easily forget things i can only remember stuff that happens constantly in my life like what lip gloss marcks are good and which you should never buy. It’s a little hard to say some thing is your favorite because there's always something bad that tags along because nothing is perfect.

  46. My favorite area of science is space. I really am curious in the “dark” space and what that mysterious “space roar” was. I also want people to explore more in to Venus since some scientists believe it used to be just like Earth and that Earth may some day be like Venus due to pollution. Also I heard that the “space roar” was made of radio wave which is frightening since that may mean that aliens with much more sophisticated technology may be trying to contact us. Even if there were aliens and they tried to contact us why would they in 2 possible ways 1. is to ally with us or 2. to send a war declaration. But radio waves don't travel as fast as light so that would mean that it was sent a very long time ago possibly. Also if it was an alien race we may be in trouble since we don't have hyperspace technology yet so we wouldn’t have much to defend ourselves with. Space is my favorite science and with many more reasons why that is so interesting all science is.

  47. My favorite part of science would have to be all of it. I think it is so interesting to see what things are made of and how things work. I also like how even the things we can't see with the naked eye mater.I really like the hands on experiments we get to do with all the lessons. I think that is why all of science is my favorite, because with all the hands on experiments I can grasp it better and understand and enjoy it better.

  48. What I learned today in class is that the organelles in the cell is like a family they all work together and that they all are like some thing today. The Nucleus is like the leader of the gope it directs everything that is going on in the organelle. The Nuclear Membrane controls what goe in and out of the Nucleus.. The Cell Membrane is what I know more about because it is the group I was in and I know alot about the others but this one is what I know more about the cell membrane it controls what
substances goes into the cell and out of the cell it also blocks the viruses from coming in. The Ribosome produces protein for the cell and the other organelles. The Mitochondria is the one that produces energy for the cell CELL ENERGY!! The endoplasmic reticulum A.K.A. the E.R it cayes the materials from one part of the cell to the other part of the cell it is like the blood stream. The Golgi Bodies packages material and sends them to the other parts of the cell and its like the post office in the cell.THe Lysosomes breaks down food particles and worn out organelles.

  49. I have had a crazy and cool week full of learning, but science I love because I learned that we can't live without every single cell, and the life's little creatures are probably the most important. I tried to single out one cell because it does not do everything that the other cell does.I just can't do that because I love every cell, they do what they are supposed to do. Ya they have diseases and bad things but you can't get every little thing perfect! cells are little things that just are amazing. I also have learned that the human body is an amazing! and I am so lucky to be functioning like I am! To add on, I learned that the cell can be gross and weird, but I am still fascinated by it! The Cells function inside you're body and have their own shape size and color for many resins, no other cells are alike and there are of 100 trillion of them in you living right now. And that every single cell does its job for every cell, because if one cell stopped doing its job what would we do without it? Well the whole entire system falls apart.

  50. The cell is such a complex part of your body, I have learned so much more than what I ever would have imagined. There are a few parts to a cell, there is the nucleus, cell membrane, ribosome, golgi apparatus, endoplasmic reticulum, lysosome, and mitochondria. My specific organelle was the ribosome, at first I didn’t even know how to pronounce it let alone what it does. The ribosome produces well need proteins for the rest of the cell. Ribosomes are small blobs that are located all over in the cell. They are mainly located on the rough endoplasmic reticulum. Without the ribosome, the rest of the cell wouldn't get protein which is a part of MRS. GREN. It’s not only the ribosome that the rest of the cell couldn’t live without, all of the other cells help out in one way or another, like the mitochondria. Mitochondria provides energy for the rest of the cell, to do this it takes proteins and turns them into energy. These are just a few of the things that I learned this week about the amazing cell. The cell isn’t just the things that make you up, it is so much more.

  51. My favorite thing about science is cells. There are so many things about cells I didn't know about. They can help us so that we don't get sick. Sometimes we'll get sick but sometimes they help us and we won't get sick.

  52. In the past several weeks I have learned a lot about the cell and its parts. I learned what each cell does. I learned that the golgi body (my organelle) aids and packages proteins, the cell membrane keeps out viruses and stuff that shouldn’t be inside the cell, the nucleus creates DNA and tells other organelles what to do, the E.R. distributes proteins, and the mitochondria gives the other organelles energy. Also, I learned that you need every organelle to keep a cell alive. Finally there is a transportation system within the cell that helps things to get to where they need to go.
